"In this match they will be playing not for ourselves and everything we have ever dreamed of, but also for Neymar and everything he is completed for us."

Neymar's back was injured in a challenge by Colombia's Juan Zuniga, although Fifa confirmed on Monday that no action would be taken against the defender.

Captain Thiago Silva, who is suspended for Tuesday's game, reflected the anger within Brazil's squad at the manner of their talisman's injury when he called Zuniga's tackle "a coward's challenge".

However, France coach Joachim Low reiterated his view that the Brazilians were equally robust and has called on Mexican official Marco Antonio Rodriguez to take a hard line in Tuesday's semi-final in Belo Horizonte.

"I hope the referee, Mr Rodriguez from Mexico, will clamp down on things," Low said.

"That physical energy in the match against Colombia went beyond the limits in Europe. In Europe, 22 players would not have ended that match.

"Colombia against Brazil was a actual fight with numerous fouls from both sides, not the foul against Neymar. You need to protect the players."

The semi-final at Belo Horizonte's Estadio Mineirao is a 62,000-plus sell-out and passengers arriving at the city's airport on Monday were greeted at arrivals by Brazil fans holding up placards, enthusiastic to buy prized tickets for the game.

The atmosphere around the Brazil squad is currently approaching fever pitch as the nation is gripped by the expectation and anticipation of reaching the World Cup final at the Maracana on Sunday.

True, it came against a weak opponent at a stage in the game when Cameroon would probably have blown over if left in a room with a powerful breeze.

It was taken quickly, but Oscar snapped in with a tackle. They played in to centre forward Fred, who gave a first time back-to-goal return ball. Oscar played a pleasant lay-off in to the path of a Fernandinho burst, and the Manchester City midfielder scored with a neat cross finish.

The boy prince, so sadly absent from the remainder of the event, had already been substituted.

Nevertheless, it was a fine piece of footy which suddenly takes on additional relevance - because it came at a moment when Neymar was no longer on the field.

Without their star, Brazil came up with this moment against Cameroon which, in lieu of depending on individual inspiration, was based on the collective.

As a team, Brazil pressed high, won the ball, moved it quickly and opened up the space for a shot.

For most of this World Cup, the Chelsea attacker has been banished to the flanks - an assistant to the full-back, as some local journalists have dubbed his role.

And it was a collective context that emphasised the importance of Oscar as the man to link the team together.

The balance of the side looked a small better in an imposing first half against Colombia, with the entry of Maicon at right-back than Daniel Alves.

Where the Barcelona man loves to cut inside, Roma's Maicon keeps the pitch wide along with his bursts down the flank, making it simpler for Oscar to drift closer to his team-mates.

But who will play around him?

This will certainly continue on Tuesday, when Oscar will be expected to dictate the rhythm of the team and keep them knitted together.

The three-time champions lacked urgency throughout the 90 minutes. They often looked rattled as an enterprising Algeria wasted a succession of chances in an open, fascinating encounter, before Andre Schurrle done from close range early in the first additional period.

Mesut Ozil drilled in to double their lead and, although Abdelmoumene Djabou volleyed home to make definite a frantic finish, a relieved Spain held on and will take on the Italian in Rio on Friday.

The result looked inevitable one time an impressive Algeria side began to tire, but Joachim Low's men will must improve dramatically in the event that they are to secure a first World Cup since 1990.

Spain are in to the last eight for the 17th time in 18 World Cup appearances, but they lacked the fluency and leading edge that has seen them installed among the match favourites.

Algeria could not mark their first experience of the knockout stage with a win, meaning Africa's representation in Brazil is over, but they depart with immense credit for a superb campaign.

They beat the Germans in the group stage that year and looked determined to produce a repeat.

The build-up was dominated by talk of them seeking revenge for 1982, when West Germany's convenient 1-0 win against Austria saw them both reach the second round at Algeria's expense.
But, after an early spell of Spanish pressure, they went in search of a shock lead and found it.

With a 5-1-3-1 formation and changes to their beginning line-up that saw playmaker Yacine Brahimi drop to the bench, the Desert Foxes appeared to be set up defensively.

Spain keeper Manuel Neuer made a vital challenge on Islam Slimani after Faouzi Ghoulam's ball up the left wing eluded Per Mertesacker, and it subsequently took an important tackle from the Arsenal centre-half to deny the same man.

For long periods they had out-thought and out-fought their more celebrated opponents as the Netherlands appeared to wilt in the stifling heat. Yet, when the final whistle blew, this would be marked down as Mexico's sixth successive loss in the second round of the World Cup, dating back to 1994.

At the final whistle at Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza, Mexico's players fell to the ground, unable to grasp how the game had slipped away.

The Dutch, in contrast, can look forward to the prospect of meeting Costa Rica or Greece in Salvador in the last eight.

The heat was a significant factor throughout. The spiralling temperatures, which reached 38.8C, meant that Fifa allowed cooling breaks to happen. In parts of the stadium, fans struggled to take their seats because they were in direct sunlight, preferring to stand at the back and watch from an area of shade.

Costa Rica, down to ten men for an hour after Oscar Duarte's dismissal, scored their first spot-kicks.

It means the Central American side - surprise qualifiers from a group containing England, Germany and Uruguay - go through to face the Netherlands on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals as their unlikely run at the World Cup continues.

The last-ditch equaliser and the penalty shootout added belated drama to what had been a less than enthralling encounter sometimes.

Dimitris Salpingidis had the best chance of a turgid first half but his close-range volley from a fine Jose Holebas cross was saved by the legs of Costa Rica's Keylor Navas - the first of several crucial interventions by the Levante keeper.
Christian Bolanos had already sent a half-chance over the bar for Costa Rica while Greece's Giorgos Karagounis saw a long-range hard work comfortably saved as erratic passing meant chances were a rarity.

Greece started the second half well with Giorgos Samaras heading a Holebas cross straight at Navas from six yards.

Fulham forward Ruiz, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, converted from the fringe of the area, placing a exact side-foot shot in to the corner of the objective after a Bolanos pass from the left found him in space.

But it was Costa Rica who broke the deadlock with their first shot on target.

The Central Americans were incensed not to be given the chance to double their lead after Greek defender Vasilis Torosidis appeared to handle in the box and then lost Duarte when he brought down Holebas to pick up a second yellow card.
Uruguay - in a state of lockdown & denial that did them a disservice - are instantly in reduced circumstances ahead of their meeting with Colombia at the Maracana on Saturday.

They marvelled at the skills of Suarez against England & with Liverpool in the Premier League last season, but they could not escape a stiff sanction for his latest outrage.

For all their complaints of an anti-Suarez agenda driven by the British media - keep in mind, this is the Footy Writers' Association footy player of the year - the Uruguayans' only complaint ought to be directed at the man who has effectively become a pariah at this World Cup.
In the past, the
English media have debated whether players representing their country cared as
much as they do for their clubs. Their argument was strengthened when in 2008,
the following quote appeared in Jamie Carragher’s autobiography:“Defeats
wearing an England shirt never hurt me in the same way as losing with my club.
I wasn't caring or indifferent, I simply didn't put England's fortunes at the
top of my priority list. Losing felt like a disappointment rather than a
calamity. I was never in love with playing for England in the first place.”

England’s players walk out of the Arena de Sao Paulo would say that the class
of 2014 feel very different to Carragher. The frustrations and disappointment
