2014 FIFA World Cup: Germany survives Algeria in extra time, 2-1
It didn't go exactly as anticipated, but in the end, the expected winner came out on top.
Heading into the match, it looked like Algeria would sit back and pack it in, then try to beat Germany on the counterattack. Well, Algeria did indeed have success on the counterattack, but it certainly wasn't as a result of sitting back and simply absorbing pressure. Algeria took it to Germany in the first half, using their pace and taking advantage of Germany's high defensive line to get in behind the defense and create dangerous opportunities in Germany's defensive third.
In fact, the African side had a goal called back in the 17th minute for offside – it was the correct call, though. Algeria continued to push forward, but couldn't beat Manuel Neuer, who constantly raced out of his own penalty area to challenge Algerian attackers or clear the ball away after a throughball.
The second half was more as anticipated, with Germany doing a better job of controlling possession and not allowing Algeria to get free on counterattacks. The game changed a bit when Philipp Lahm was shifted to right back and Semi Khedira moved to midfield. Germany looked better in attack, but it took some time for the European side to get on the same page in midfield. Algeria was getting some opportunities, and the game became a little more wide-open.
Germany had several chances in the final minutes, but Rais M'Bolhi continued to come up big for Algeria.
We went to 30 minutes of extra time – and then Germany was finally able to break through.
The first goal came only two minutes into the extra time, off a beautiful finish from Andre Schurrle, who slotted a Thomas Muller cross past M'Bolhi. Mesut Ozil seemingly iced the game in the 120th minute, when he buried a shot from inside the penalty area after M'Bolhi saved Schurrle's initial attempt. Abdelmoumene Djabou brought one back for Algeria in the 121st minute, but it wasn't enough.
It wasn't easy, but Germany is through to face France in quarterfinal.

Paul Pogba, imperious and
growing by the minute, proved the difference and France were able to quell a
spirited Nigerian side in Brasilia on Monday and advance to the quarterfinals
in great style. A Nigerian resistance, led as always by the sure-gloved
Vincent Enyeama, was broken in the second half when the Nigerian goalkeeper
himself palmed a French corner into the path of Pogba at the far end who rose

But they failed to regroup after the late blow, and allowed substitute Antoine Griezmann to trick Joesph Yobo into scoring a self-goal off a corner taken by Mathieu Valbuena, who like Pogba had a great game. Just before Pogba's goal, France had the mortification of witnessing - almost in slow motion - as Victor Moses falling back to help his defence calmly cleared the ball off the goalline after Karim Benzema and Griezmann, who replaced an ineffectual Olivier Giroud, combined well to create a fine opportunity for the Europeans. Even here, Enyeama got a glove to Benzema's intended late flick past him and the rebound fell free and as it bounced towards the Nigerian goal unattended, Moses arrived to save the day.

It was end to end

Pogba powered most of France's moves down the middle, Nigeria relied more on
their right flank to cause the French defence trouble.
Olivier Giroud and
Mikel, predictably carried their mutual Premiership grudge to Brasilia when the
Arsenal forward and Chelsea midfielder clash for a silly reason. Referee Mark
Geiger of the US had to step in and separate the two 'English schoolboys.'
By the break, both
teams had had six shots at goal, with one each on target, but the second half
would be where the team with greater depth would prevail. Nigeria had won just
one of their last 11 games at the World Cup, and despite their robust show, it
looked like this dubious record would once again show up. France on the other
hand had a more settled feel about them even as they were kind of hustled by
the more robust Nigerians. With the third close game on the trot -- it showed
that there were no pretenders in the Round of 16 at this World Cup.

World Cup 2014: Arjen Robben to flee social control over 'dive'
Arjen Robben can avoid retrospective social control from Fifa when he admitted diving within the Netherlands' 2-1 World Cup persuade North American nation.
