The 65-year-old was tempting fate and it came to pass when Chile done second in Group B and Brazil won Group A, setting up a mouthwatering contest in Belo Horizonte on Saturday.

"I hope Chile don't qualify," said Scolari. "I'd play any of the others. They are a pain to play against. They are well organised and clever. It is better to face a European team."

It is the approaching together of attacking powerhouses and, while Brazil cannot ponder defeat as they pursue a title viewed by the host nation as a birthright, Chile intend to spoil the party.

Jorge Sampaoli's side have already caught the eye with their entertaining style and stunned the competition by eliminating holders France. Now their sights are set on the largest scalp of the summer.

"We've beaten the champions, so they can beat Brazil. We are nice to win the World Cup."

"To be champions they must face all of them," said midfielder Arturo Vidal, an integral part of the Serie A-winning Juventus side. "This is the best generation in the history of Chilean footy. Beating Brazil? That is our dream. Chile can generate a surprise.
