Bobby Moore
assured his place in football history when he became the first — and, till
date, only — England skipper to lift the 1966 World Cup after beating Germany
in extra time. He won a then-record 108 caps, captained his country 90 times
and built a lasting reputation as England's finest centre-back. Moore broke
into the England youth team in 1957 and went on to make his first team debut
the following year. He played his final game for England in a 0-1 defeat to
Italy in November 1973. When he died from cancer at 51, in 1993, football's
greats lined up to pay tribute. Pele said, "The world has lost one of its
greatest players. He was my friend as well as the best defender I have ever
played against."
